A very early aerial view of Rangoon c. 1920.
The
old municipal offices at Ripon Hall (now the site of YCDC and City
Hall) and the Rowe and Co. department store are clearly visible to the
right of the Sule Pagoda. The Sule Pagoda itself is surrounded by
trees, not shops.
The streets of Rangoon were designed to capture the wind coming from the sea and to provide shade throughout the day to pedestrians walking along its wide pavements. It was in 1920 the most modern and beautiful city in southeast Asia and could be again.
